I was elected senator at my university, but Im curious on how it?

I was elected as a representative while in college. I did it almost on a dare from a friend, who was going to join me but bailed. Man, I am NOT cut out for politics, but I really wanted to help the student radio station come back; it had been shut down for the minor issue of transmitting without a license. Details, details. No, I would not expect it to appear on your transcript. How will it benefit you? If nothing else, youll learn, and thats the point. It may help you develop some new skills or find new interests. If you treat it as resume fodder, it will be just that. Why did you run? I know why I did, and there were good and bad reasons. Student radio was a good reason, while my general bullheadedness was a bad reason. Ultimately, it was an exercise in self-actualization; I became the person I am through the things that I did, as all people do. I could talk about my accomplishments and failures in terms of my motivations. Thats what made it a valuable experience. Yes, it was on my resume at one time, but not because I was ticking off a box. I dont recall anyone asking about it in an interview, but they would have gotten a good reflection on what I now know is generally valued highly in interviews.
